Pocket Coffee is a special kind of chocolate candy made by the Ferrero company. It is sold in many countries around the world. Each Pocket Coffee is a small, dark chocolate shell. Inside, it holds liquid espresso coffee.
This candy first came out in Italy in 1968. Just like other Ferrero candies such as Rocher and Mon Chéri, Pocket Coffee is only sold for part of the year. You can usually buy them from November to April.
How Pocket Coffee Started
The idea for Pocket Coffee came from William Salice in the early 1960s. He was an assistant to Michele Ferrero, the owner of Ferrero. William noticed that there were no coffee bars at the new Autogrills in Italy. Autogrills are like rest stops on highways where people can stop for food and drinks.
Michele Ferrero thought of a candy for people who worked long hours, like truck drivers. He wanted to give them a quick boost of energy. Michele Ferrero also came up with the famous saying for Pocket Coffee: "the energy of chocolate and the charge of coffee."
What's Inside Pocket Coffee?
Pocket Coffee is made with a few simple ingredients:
- Coffee (sweet and liquid)
- Chocolate paste
- Chocolate milk
- Cocoa butter
- Cocoa paste (from cocoa beans)
- Lactose (a type of sugar found in milk)
Where to Find Pocket Coffee
Pocket Coffee is very popular in Italy, where Ferrero's main office is located. Germany is the second biggest market for this candy. In the 1970s, it was also easy to find in stores in France.
For a long time, it was hard to buy Pocket Coffee outside of Europe. But now, you can often find it online or in some larger food stores around the world.
