How Poetry Got Its Name
The community started in 1858 and was first called Turner's Point. It had a post office and a school. In 1876, the name changed to Poetry. A local shop owner named Maston Ussery suggested the new name. He said that when spring arrived, the beautiful area reminded him of a poem.
Early Growth and Changes
Poetry grew slowly over the years. Its population reached its highest point around 1904, with about 234 people. However, the post office closed in 1905. Mail services then moved to nearby Terrell.
Becoming a Town: The Incorporation Story
For a long time, Poetry was not officially a town. In 1984, local residents voted to make it an official town. But the Kaufman County Commissioners Court said the vote wasn't valid because of some technical rules. This meant Poetry stayed an unincorporated community.
However, in the 2020 election, the people of Poetry voted again. This time, their vote to become an official town was successful! This was a big step for the community.

Students living in Poetry attend public schools. The Terrell Independent School District provides education for the community. This school district helps make sure children in Poetry get a good education.
