Poinsettia Heights facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Poinsettia Heights is a friendly neighborhood located in the northeast part of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Imagine a map: it's west of a big road called Federal Highway (also known as US 1) and north of Sunrise Boulevard. It sits right next to other neighborhoods like Lake Ridge and Middle River Terrace.

This area was first built after World War II in the 1940s and early 1950s. A company called Gill Construction Company developed it, and back then, they called it "North Ridge."

What is Poinsettia Heights Like?

Today, homes fill the streets from 15th Avenue on the west side all the way to 20th Avenue and a small lake called Lake Melva on the east. A natural boundary to the north is the Middle River, and 13th Street separates Poinsettia Heights from the nearby Lake Ridge neighborhood.

Homes and Buildings

Most of the homes in Poinsettia Heights are for single families. This means they are houses where one family lives. However, along the two main roads, you can also find townhomes and condos. These are different types of homes where people live close together.

Homes here usually range from about 1,100 to 1,800 square feet (which is about 102 to 167 square meters). But if new houses are built, they can be much larger, sometimes over 4,000 square feet (more than 370 square meters)!

Schools and Shopping

Poinsettia Heights is a great place for families because it has two schools right inside the neighborhood: Sunrise Middle School and Bennett Elementary School. This makes it easy for kids to get to class!

For shopping, residents can visit the stores along U.S. 1, which is very close by. Its location on the east side of Fort Lauderdale makes it convenient for getting around and finding what you need.
