Point Reyes was once a small community or "settlement" located in Marin County, California. A settlement is a place where people live and build homes. Point Reyes is no longer an active community today, which is why it's called a "former settlement."

Where Was Point Reyes?

This old community was found about 7.25 miles (11.67 kilometers) north-northeast of the Point Reyes Lighthouse. If you were driving along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, it was about 9 miles (14 kilometers) from the lighthouse. It was also about 6.5 miles (10.5 kilometers) from the town of Inverness, California. Point Reyes was located at an elevation of 79 feet (24 meters) above sea level. Even in 1947, you could still find Point Reyes marked on maps.

The Post Office at Point Reyes

A very important part of any community is its post office. Point Reyes had its own post office that served the people living there. It opened in 1891 and stayed active until 1942. During that time, the post office even moved to a different spot in 1919. A post office helps people send and receive letters and packages, connecting them to the outside world.
