The Polaskia chende is a special type of cactus that holds water in its stems, making it a succulent plant. It naturally grows in a small mountain area in Mexico. You can find it in the northern part of Oaxaca and the southern part of Puebla.
This cactus lives in dry, desert-like areas called xerophytic shrublands. These are places where plants are adapted to live with very little water. The Polaskia chende grows at high altitudes, usually between 1,500 and 2,000 meters (about 4,900 to 6,500 feet) above sea level.
What it Looks Like
The Polaskia chende is a tall, branching cactus. It can grow to be about 3 to 5 meters (10 to 16 feet) tall. Its stems branch out, giving it a tree-like shape.
Like many cacti, it has sharp spines on its stems. These spines help protect the plant from animals that might want to eat it. The cactus also produces beautiful white flowers. These flowers usually bloom during the cooler months, from August all the way through January.
Where it Lives
This unique cactus is native only to a specific region in Mexico. Its natural home is in the mountains of northern Oaxaca and southern Puebla. This area has a dry climate, which is perfect for the Polaskia chende to thrive. It is well-suited to its environment, able to survive in places where other plants might struggle due to lack of water.
