Poldy Bird (born December 16, 1941 – died June 1, 2018) was a famous writer and poet from Argentina. She wrote for many newspapers and magazines in Argentina and other countries. Her stories and poems touched the hearts of many readers.

Her Life and Writing Journey

Poldy Bird was born in Paraná, a city in the Entre Ríos area of Argentina. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Buenos Aires. A sad event happened when she was only eight years old. Her mother, Leopoldina Lichtschein, who was also a writer, died in a train accident. This difficult time greatly affected Poldy's life. It also helped shape her path to becoming a writer herself.

Poldy started writing at a young age. When she was thirteen, she won a poetry contest! By the time she was sixteen, her first short story was published. The next year, she began to professionally publish her poems and stories in important magazines. These magazines were popular in Argentina and around the world.

Besides writing for children and young people, Poldy also worked as the director of a magazine called Vosotras. She helped make it a very popular magazine for women. Poldy Bird received many awards for her writing. Some of these include the Santa Clara de Asís and the Premio Mundial Consagración de la Literatura.

Famous Books and Stories

Poldy Bird wrote many well-loved books. Some of her most famous ones are Cuentos para Verónica, Cuentos para leer sin rimel, Nuevos cuentos para Verónica, and Cuentos con niebla.

Cuentos para Verónica means "Stories for Verónica." Poldy wrote this book in honor of her first daughter. Many people say it is one of the most popular books ever sold in Argentina, after Martín Fierro. It sold over two million copies in Argentina alone! It was also one of the first Argentinian books to be translated into Japanese.

Later in her life, Poldy Bird continued to work in media. She wrote for the Argentinian magazine Única and for Radio Miami in the United States.
