History of Paraná
Early Settlers
In the 1500s, people from the city of Santa Fe started to settle on the other side of the Paraná River. These first settlers called the area "Baxada del Paraná". This name meant "descent to the Paraná" or "Paraná's lower part."
Capital City Role
For a short time, between 1854 and 1861, Paraná was a very important city. It served as the capital city of the Argentine Confederation. This was a group of provinces that formed Argentina before it became the country we know today.
Paraná's Economy
Main Activities
Paraná is important for a few reasons. First, it is where the provincial government works. This means many important decisions for Entre Ríos are made here.
The city also has a busy river port. This port is used to move many goods from the surrounding area. These goods include cereals, cattle, fish, and lumber. They are loaded onto ships to be sent to other places.
Local Industries
Paraná also has its own factories. The main things produced here are cement, furniture, and ceramics. These industries provide jobs and help the city's economy grow.
City Sights and Architecture
Exploring the City Center
The center of Paraná is a mix of old and new. You can find beautiful colonial churches that have been there for a long time. There are also buildings with European styles, like the 3 de Febrero Theatre and the Government House.
The city's Cathedral shows a mix of different building styles. Near Parque Urquiza park, you can see modern tall buildings. This mix makes Paraná's cityscape unique and interesting.
Connecting Cities
Paraná is connected to the city of Santa Fe by a special tunnel. This tunnel is called the Hernandarias Subfluvial Tunnel. It goes under the river and was opened in 1969. It makes it easy to travel between the two cities.
Getting Around: Transport
Air Travel
Paraná has its own airport, called General Justo José de Urquiza Airport. Its code is PRA. It is about 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) from the city. You can take regular flights from here to Buenos Aires (at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery).
Another airport option is Sauce Viejo Airport. This airport is located in the nearby city of Santa Fe.
