What Makes Poley Mountain Special?
Poley Mountain has been greatly improved over the past ten years. A group of local people bought the mountain's equipment in the late 1990s. This helped keep the mountain open for skiing. Since then, it has been open every winter season. On average, it operates for about 100 days each year.
New Lifts and Trails
In 2008, a new ski lift called the Alpine Lift was added. This lift is a fixed-grip triple chair. It gives skiers access to six new trails on the west side of the mountain. These trails are great for beginners and intermediate skiers.
One of the new trails, Sous-Bois Shediac, was created in 2009. It is a "gladed" run, meaning you ski through trees. An older T-bar lift was removed and that area is now a mogul run for advanced skiers. The Alpine Lift made Poley Mountain the resort with the most uphill capacity in the Maritimes. This means it can move more skiers up the mountain faster.
How Poley Mountain Compares
Poley Mountain is often compared to other ski areas in the region. These include Ski Wentworth in Nova Scotia and Crabbe Mountain in New Brunswick. All three resorts are similar in size and elevation. They offer similar types of ski terrain.
The Lodge Fire
On December 9, 2014, the main lodge at Poley Mountain caught fire. Firefighters worked for hours to control the blaze. The lodge was a well-known building and a symbol of the mountain. Many people were very sad to hear about its loss. The damage from the fire was estimated to be very high. Brian Gallant, who was the Premier of New Brunswick at the time, shared his sadness about the fire.
Future Plans for Poley Mountain
Poley Mountain is thinking about opening for summer activities. They are looking into creating a mountain bike park that uses the ski lifts. A special study was done by Gravity Logic, a company known for designing bike parks like the one at Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia. The people in charge of Poley Mountain are discussing these exciting plans.
