The Polish glacier from above the high camp

The Polish Glacier (in Spanish, Glaciar de los Polacos) is a huge river of ice found on Aconcagua. Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in the Andes mountain range and the highest peak in all of the Americas! This amazing glacier got its name from a special group of climbers from Poland in 1934.

What is a Glacier?

A glacier is like a giant, slow-moving river made of ice. It forms over many years when snow falls and piles up. The weight of the new snow presses down on the old snow, turning it into solid ice. Glaciers move very slowly, carving out valleys and shaping the land around them. They are an important part of Earth's water cycle.

Aconcagua: The Giant Mountain

Aconcagua is located in Argentina, near the border with Chile. It's part of the Andes Mountains, which are the longest mountain range in the world. Aconcagua is a very popular mountain for climbers from all over the globe. It's often called the "Roof of the Americas" because it's so incredibly high. Even though it's tall, it's considered a good challenge for climbers who want to try high-altitude mountaineering.

The Polish Expedition of 1934

In 1934, a group of brave climbers from Poland set out to conquer Aconcagua. Their expedition was led by a man named Konstanty Jodko-Narkiewicz. Instead of following the usual path, they found a new and challenging way to reach the top. This new path went right over the glacier. Because of their amazing achievement, the glacier was named "the Polish Glacier" and their new climbing path became known as "the Polish Route." This route is still used by climbers today who are looking for a more difficult and exciting way to reach Aconcagua's summit.
