Politics of Beijing facts for kids
The politics of Beijing work like a special system found in many parts of the People's Republic of China. It's like having two main groups in charge: the government and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The Mayor of Beijing is the top leader of the city's government. Since Beijing is a huge city that's managed like a province, the Mayor has a very important role, similar to a governor. However, in this system, the Mayor also works under the Beijing Municipal Committee Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party. This Party Secretary is actually the most powerful person in Beijing.
The job of Beijing Party Secretary has always been a very important one. Since the People's Republic of China was founded, the Party Secretary of Beijing has almost always been part of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, which is China's top leadership group. Because Beijing is the capital city, the Secretary also helps make big decisions for the whole country. For example, Peng Zhen, the first Beijing party secretary, was a very important national figure. He was removed from his position during a big political change called the Cultural Revolution. Xie Fuzhi, who was in charge from 1967 to 1972, was also China's top security official and had a lot of influence across the country. Chen Xitong (who served from 1992-1995) was removed from his position. When China celebrated its 50th birthday in 1999, it was Beijing Party Secretary Jia Qinglin (1997-2002) who led the celebrations. Liu Qi (2002–2012) was the head of the committee for the Beijing Olympic Games, and he spoke at both the opening and closing events. Liu Qi also led the celebration for the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China in 2009.
