Nie Rongzhen (Chinese: 聂荣臻; Wade–Giles: Nieh Jung-chen; December 29, 1899 – May 14, 1992) was an important military leader in China. He was one of ten top military leaders, called Marshals, in China's People's Liberation Army. He was the last of these Marshals to be alive.

Biography of Nie Rongzhen
Nie Rongzhen was born in Jiangjin County in Sichuan, which is now part of Chongqing. He came from a wealthy family and was well-educated. In his 20s, Nie went to study science in Belgium at the University of Labour.
Early Political Life
While in Belgium, Nie met Zhou Enlai, another important Chinese leader. Nie decided to join a group of Chinese students in France. There, he studied engineering and became a close student and helper of Zhou Enlai. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1923.
Nie later studied at important military schools, including the Soviet Red Army Military College and the Whampoa Academy. Early in his career, he worked in the political part of the Whampoa military school. He also served in the Chinese Red Army.
Military Career
Nie Rongzhen played a key role in several major conflicts in China.
World War II Role
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Nie was a high-ranking commander. He was the deputy division commander of the 115th division of the Eighth Route Army. Later, in the late 1930s, he led troops in an important area near Yan Xishan's stronghold.
Chinese Civil War
In the Chinese Civil War, Nie commanded the Northern China Military Region. Together with his deputy, Xu Xiangqian, his forces won against another army in Tianjin, which is near Beijing.
Post-War Leadership
During the Korean War, Nie helped plan important military actions. He also helped prepare the country for war. In 1955, Nie was made a Marshal of the PLA. Later, he was in charge of China's nuclear weapons program.
He also started the Beijing Bayi School in 1947.
Later Life and Family
During a time called the Cultural Revolution, Nie faced difficulties. However, he later got his important roles back. He became a top leader of the country's armed forces, called the Central Military Committee. He also became a leader in the National People's Congress, which is like China's parliament. He retired in 1987 and passed away in Beijing.
Nie had a daughter named Nie Li in 1930. She was imprisoned with her mother for some time. Nie Li later became a lieutenant general in the People's Liberation Army. She was the first woman to hold that high rank.
