History of Poncarale
What's in a Name?
The name Poncarale comes from an old Latin phrase, pons caralis. This means "driveway bridge of the castle." It likely refers to a bridge that connected a castle to the main part of the town, called a burgum.
Ancient Times and the Middle Ages
The oldest things found in Poncarale are from the Roman Empire. These were discovered in 1931. Workers found them while fixing things after the Garza river flooded.
Around the 9th century, a powerful family from Brescia, called the Poncarali, lived here. They were in charge of managing the flat lands around the town.
From the 15th to the 19th Century
Like many places, Poncarale was affected by the plague a long time ago. The town's first church opened in 1717. Later, in 1897, a cemetery and the town hall were built. This was done by a company led by the mayor at the time, Emanuele Bertazzoli.
The 20th Century
For a while, from 1928 to 1956, Poncarale was combined with another town called Flero. They formed one larger town called Poncarale Flero. This change happened because of a special order from the king.
During World War II, the area known as Monte Netto became a safe place. Many partisans, who were fighters resisting the enemy, found shelter there.
Geography of Poncarale
The land around Poncarale is special because of a raised area called the Monte Netto. This is a flat, isolated hill. Several rivers flow through the area, including the Molone and the Vaso Orso. Farmers in Poncarale grow important crops like corn, sugar beet, and soy. It's also a significant area for growing grapes for vineyards.
