The Poppleton Block is a historic building in Downtown Omaha, Nebraska. It's located at 1001 Farnam Street. This cool building was built way back in 1880. It was made for a famous Omaha lawyer and politician named A.J. Poppleton. Because it's so special, it became an Omaha Landmark on July 13, 1982. Later that same year, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a really important historical place!
About the Poppleton Block
The Poppleton Block was designed by architect Henry Voss. He used a style called High Victorian Italianate. This style was popular for buildings around the time it was built.
Building Design and Features
The City of Omaha Landmarks Heritage Preservation Commission says this building shows what commercial buildings looked like in Omaha before the 1900s. It has three stories. The building features special decorations called cornices. These are decorative ledges that stick out from the top of the building or above windows.
The windows have different shapes, like round, half-round, and slightly pointed arches. The ground floor has cast iron storefronts. Cast iron is a strong metal that was often used for decorative fronts on buildings back then.
Who Used the Building?
A.J. Poppleton was a lawyer and a politician. A politician is someone who works in government. He used part of the building for his law firm. However, he didn't actually work there himself.
The rest of the building was rented out. Other businesses and offices used the space. Over the years, the Poppleton Block has mostly been used for commercial purposes. Today, it still serves as office space.
