The Port of Arinaga is a small but important seaport. It is located on the eastern coast of Gran Canaria. This island is part of the Canary Islands in Spain. The Canary Islands are found in the Atlantic Ocean.

A Brief History of Arinaga Port

The idea for the Port of Arinaga started in the late 1800s. People wanted a small harbor to help farmers export their crops from the southern part of Gran Canaria. Building work began after a crisis in 1917 during World War I.

In 1927, there were plans to make the port bigger. However, this expansion did not happen at that time. Later in the 20th century, there was a huge project planned. This project would have made Arinaga Port even larger than the Port of Las Palmas. But these big plans were stopped in the 1970s.

How the Port Works Today

The Port of Arinaga is managed by the Port Authority of Las Palmas [es]. As of 2020, the port mainly handles solid bulk cargo. This means it deals with large amounts of materials like sand, gravel, or grain.

Green Energy at the Port

The Port of Arinaga is also home to an offshore wind turbine. This turbine helps to create clean energy. In 2013, this wind turbine set a new record in Spain. It produced 118.05 MWh of electricity from a single generator. This shows how the port is also involved in renewable energy.
