Portamenti
A visual example of portamento, showing a smooth slide between notes.

In music, portamento is when a singer or instrumentalist smoothly slides from one note to another. Imagine a gentle glide instead of stepping clearly from one sound to the next. It's a bit like a glissando, but usually much shorter and between notes that are close together.

For a long time, especially in Opera and violin playing, musicians often used portamento. They would slide between notes in a tune instead of singing or playing each note perfectly separately. This style was very popular in the early 20th century.

What is Portamento?

Portamento means "carrying" in Italian. In music, it's about carrying the sound smoothly from one note to the next. It's not a sudden jump, but a continuous change in pitch. Think of it like a musical ramp connecting two notes.

Portamento vs. Glissando

While portamento is a short, smooth slide, a glissando can be much longer. A composer usually writes a glissando into the music, telling the musician exactly where to slide and how far. A glissando might even cover two or three octaves! Portamento, on the other hand, is often a performer's choice, used for style or expression, and usually connects notes that are very close.

Portamento Through Time

The way musicians use portamento has changed a lot. In the early 1900s, it was very common. If you listen to old recordings of opera singers or violinists, you'll hear many slides between notes. It was part of the musical style of that time.

Over the last 50 years, portamento became less common. Many music teachers started to teach students to sing or play each note clearly, without sliding. However, portamento is not completely gone. In some types of music, especially in opera, it can still be used to create a special effect. It's all about what sounds best to the musician and the audience.
