The Mystic River Historic District is a special area in the village of Mystic, Connecticut. It covers the part of Mystic that is on the Groton side of the Mystic River. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 24, 1979. It's about 235 acres big and includes many buildings from the 1800s. This area is also known as West Mystic.

You can find this historic district along important roads like Route 1 and Route 215. Other streets in the district include West Mystic Avenue, High Street, Pearl Street, and Cliff Street. The famous Mystic Pizza restaurant, known from the movie, is also located here.

Why This District Is Special

This historic district is very important because it shows a complete 19th-century community. It's rare to find a place where houses, public buildings, stores, and factories from the 1800s are all still standing. Even better, they are in good condition and still being used today!

The buildings in Mystic show many different architectural styles. These styles were popular as the town grew and changed. They reflect the tastes of the wealthy citizens who lived there.

Buildings and Styles

In 1978, the district had about 470 different sites and structures. About 265 of these were houses built in popular 19th-century styles. These styles include Greek Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne.

The district also includes the old train depot for West Mystic. This building is a reminder of how people traveled long ago.

Historic Sites Within the District

There are two important historic sites located within the Mystic River Historic District:

  • The site of Fort Rachel: Here, a single 12-pound cannon helped stop a British attack on Mystic in 1814.
  • The site of the Mystic massacre: This is where a major event involving Pequot Native Americans happened in 1637. The exact spot is not known today.
