About the Painting
This painting shows Don Carlos in a relaxed and elegant pose. He is wearing a black outfit with fancy grey braids. Around his neck, he has a thick gold chain with the Order of the Golden Fleece. This was a very important award.
Details of the Portrait
In the painting, Don Carlos holds a hat in his left hand. He holds a glove in his right hand. Velázquez made the figure stand out by placing him in the darkest part of the painting. The artist also added a small strip of canvas, about 4 centimeters wide, to each side of the painting. This made the portrait look even more powerful and important.
