Port Side Wharf Cruise Terminal

Portside Wharf is a cool place in Hamilton, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It's a special spot where big cruise ships from all over the world come to visit.

But Portside Wharf isn't just for ships! It's also a fun area with homes, shops, and restaurants. You can find places to eat, a big fish and chip shop, a supermarket, and even a movie theater. Lots of tourists arriving by ship visit, and local people often come by CityCat (a type of ferry) to enjoy the area too.

Brisbane Cruise Terminal: A Gateway to the World

The Brisbane Cruise Terminal at Portside Wharf first opened its doors on 29 August 2006. This huge project cost about $750 million to build. It's located on the north side of the Brisbane River, a bit upstream from the Gateway Bridge.

What Kind of Ships Visit?

The terminal is designed to welcome large ships up to 270 meters (about 885 feet) long. You'll often see giant ocean liners, fancy super yachts, and smaller expedition ships docking here. On average, a ship arrives about once a week!

However, some of the very biggest cruise ships, like the 345-meter-long RMS Queen Mary 2, are too tall to fit under the Gateway Bridge. These super-sized ships have to dock at other places north of the bridge, like Pinkenba Wharf.

Past and Future of the Terminal

For a while, Portside Wharf was the home port for the P&O cruise ship Pacific Sun, which was later sold. Another P&O ship, the Pacific Dawn, also used the wharf as a hub. In its first year, the terminal hosted 55 ships, making Brisbane a very popular cruise port in Australia.

Because more and more huge ships are being built, there are plans for a new, even bigger cruise terminal. This new terminal, planned for the Myrtletown area, will be able to handle the largest "mega ships" in the world.
