The Porvenir Volcano is a fascinating inactive volcano located in Costa Rica. It is a type of volcano called a stratovolcano, which means it's tall and cone-shaped, built up by many layers of hardened lava and ash.
You can find Porvenir Volcano in the San Carlos area of Alajuela. It's about 3 kilometers away from the Platanar Volcano and is part of the Central Mountain Range. This volcano is also inside the beautiful Juan Castro Blanco National Park.
About Porvenir Volcano
Porvenir Volcano stands tall at 430 meters above the surrounding land. It covers an area of about 15 square kilometers. The top of the volcano has an eroded crater that is about 160 meters wide.
Location and Features
This volcano is in the same line as other famous Costa Rican volcanoes, like Poás Volcano, Barva Volcano, and Irazú Volcano. On its eastern side, the crater's edge is broken by a crack in the Earth, called a fault. Inside this crack, there's a small cone that is about 20 to 40 meters high. There might be another small cone to the south as well.
On the western slopes of Porvenir Volcano, you can find two beautiful lakes: Lake Congo and Lake Pozo Verde.
Volcano Activity
Scientists have not found any signs of recent activity from Porvenir Volcano. This means there are no reports of it erupting or showing any signs of heat or gas coming from it. It is considered an inactive volcano.
