The Potamopyrgus acus is a tiny freshwater snail. It is a very special creature found only in New Zealand. Sadly, it is also a critically endangered species. This means it is at a very high risk of disappearing forever.
Where This Snail Lives
This little snail has only ever been found in one spot. This special place is a small, steep bank made of limestone. It's located in a gully at Limestone Downs Station in the Waikato region of New Zealand.
Scientists first found this snail in 1981. But when they looked for more in 2002 and 2003, they couldn't find any. The land where it lives has been cleared for farms. Cows grazing there could also harm its home. Because of this, scientists worry that this snail might no longer exist.
Why It's Endangered
In November 2018, the Department of Conservation looked at the Potamopyrgus acus. They decided it was "Nationally Critical." This is the highest threat level in the New Zealand Threat Classification System.
The snail got this status because it lives in a very small area. Its entire home is less than one hectare. That's about the size of a sports field. Since it's found in only one place, it's very vulnerable.
