Potters was once a small community in Edison Township. It is located in Middlesex County, in the state of New Jersey. Today, the area is a neighborhood within Edison.

What Was Potters?

Potters was known as an "unincorporated community." This means it was a group of homes and businesses. It did not have its own local government. Instead, it was part of a larger township, which was Edison.

Early History of Potters

Potters was in the northern part of Edison Township. It was sometimes called Potters Crossing. People believe it started as an African-American community. This might have been as early as the 1800s.

In 1917, seven families moved to Potters. They came from Harlem, a famous neighborhood in New York City. These families were considered upper-middle-class. The community was centered around Inman Avenue and Grove Avenue.

Growth and Community Life

Potters grew a lot in the 1920s. Many families from the southern United States moved there. By the 1940s, more than 1,500 people lived in Potters. The community had three churches. It also had its own volunteer fire department. This shows it was a strong and active community.

Changes and New Beginnings

In the 1950s, Edison Township wanted to improve the Potters area. They planned new housing projects. These projects aimed to replace older parts of the community.

During the 1960s and 1970s, big changes happened. This was part of a plan called "urban renewal." Urban renewal projects aim to improve city areas. The community of Potters changed a lot during this time. Many homes were replaced.

Today, the area has James D. Elder Park. There are also two housing developments. These are Greenwood Townhouses and Colonial Square Townhouses. In 1978, the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church moved to a new location. These changes helped create the neighborhood we see today.
