The Powelliphanta lignaria, also known as an amber snail, is a very large, meat-eating land snail. It is a type of mollusc that lives on land. These snails belong to a group called Gastropoda, which includes snails and slugs.
The eggs of the P. lignaria snail are oval-shaped. They are usually about 9 to 10 millimeters long and 7.75 to 8.25 millimeters wide.
Where They Live
The Powelliphanta lignaria snail is only found in one place. It lives on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. This means it is endemic to that area.
Different Kinds of Amber Snails
There are seven different types, or subspecies, of Powelliphanta lignaria snails. A subspecies is a group of animals within a species that has small differences. All of these subspecies are considered to be in danger. The New Zealand Department of Conservation keeps track of how threatened they are.
Here are the different subspecies and their threat levels:
- Powelliphanta lignaria johnstoni (named by Powell, 1946) – This type is Nationally Endangered. This means it is at very high risk of disappearing from New Zealand.
- Powelliphanta lignaria lignaria (named by Hutton, 1888) – This type is Nationally Vulnerable. This means it is at high risk of becoming endangered.
- Powelliphanta lignaria lusca (Powell, 1949) – This type is Nationally Vulnerable.
- Powelliphanta lignaria oconnori (Powell, 1938) – This type is Nationally Vulnerable.
- Powelliphanta lignaria rotella (Powell, 1938) – This type is Nationally Endangered.
- Powelliphanta lignaria ruforadiata (Powell, 1949) – This type is Nationally Endangered.
- Powelliphanta lignaria unicolorata (Powell, 1930) – This type is Nationally Vulnerable.
