Early Days and Town Life
In 1816, the Georgia General Assembly, which is the state's main law-making body, officially recognized Powelton as a town. This meant it had a "municipal charter," giving it some local powers. However, this official town status didn't last forever. In 1901, the charter was removed, and Powelton became an unincorporated community.
For many years, Powelton was an important local hub. It even had its own post office, which helped people send and receive mail. This post office was open for a long time, from 1804 until 1913, showing how active the community once was.
An Important Religious Meeting
Powelton is also famous for a significant event in religious history. In 1822, a very important meeting of Baptists took place here. This gathering led to the official creation of the Georgia Baptist Convention. This organization became a major group for Baptist churches across Georgia, helping them work together and grow.
