History of Poydras
Poydras was first settled in the 1700s by people from the Canary Islands. At that time, Louisiana was a Spanish colony. The town is likely named after Julien de Lallande Poydras, an important person in Louisiana's history.
A man named Albert Estopinal, Jr. was born in Poydras in 1869. He became a district attorney, judge, and sheriff in St. Bernard Parish. His father, Albert Estopinal, Sr., later served in the U.S. Congress.
In 1922, a major flood caused the local levee (a wall built to stop floods) to break. This event destroyed the community of Poydras. Some historians believe the levee was intentionally broken to protect the larger city of New Orleans from flooding. The water level in New Orleans dropped quickly after the break.
Poydras was also badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. This powerful storm caused widespread destruction in the area.
