Olga Pozzi-Escot Zapata (born October 1, 1933) is a talented American composer and music expert. She was born in Peru. She also teaches music at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts.
Early Life and Education
Olga Pozzi Escot was born in Lima, Peru. Her father, Marius Emmanuel Pozzi Escot, was a French professor. Her mother was Lucía María Zapata Hurtado. After living in Peru, she moved to France for a while.
When she returned to Peru, she studied music. From 1949 to 1953, she attended the Academy of Music Sas-Rosay in Lima.
In late 1953, she moved to the United States. She went to Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Three years later, she became an American citizen. Between 1954 and 1957, she studied at the famous Juilliard School in New York. She earned a degree in composition in 1956 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957.
She also studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg in Germany.
Music and Writings
Olga Pozzi Escot has written many important books and articles about music. She is the author of The Poetics of Simple Mathematics in Music. She also co-wrote Sonic Design: The Nature of Sound and Music.
Since 1980, she has been the main editor of a music journal called Sonus. She has written more than thirty articles for this journal. These articles explore how music and mathematics are connected.
Her musical works have been recorded by several record labels. These include Delos, Neuma, Spectrum, Leo, Music & Arts, and Centaur. Her works are published by Publication Contact International.
Personal Life
Pozzi Escot lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her partner was the composer and theorist Robert Cogan (1930–2021).
