Prairie Creek is a small, unincorporated community in Vigo County, Indiana. It is also known by its older name, Middletown. Even though it's not a city, Prairie Creek has its own post office with the ZIP code 47869. It sits about 528 feet (161 meters) above sea level. In 1959, the official name "Prairie Creek" was chosen by the United States Board on Geographic Names. This community is part of the larger Terre Haute area.

A Glimpse into the Past

The community, originally called Middletown, was first planned on August 24, 1831. A person named James D. Piety laid out the town along the old Vincennes Road.

In the early days, Middletown had several businesses. Daniel Ryerson ran a hotel and a drug store. Jonas P. Lykins owned a store. Z. J. Hunt also had a hotel. Hiram Hight built a steam mill in 1847. The first brick house was built in 1849 by Jacob Ernest. The post office in Prairie Creek has been open since 1822.

Where is Prairie Creek?
