A Glimpse into the Past
The community, originally called Middletown, was first planned on August 24, 1831. A person named James D. Piety laid out the town along the old Vincennes Road.
In the early days, Middletown had several businesses. Daniel Ryerson ran a hotel and a drug store. Jonas P. Lykins owned a store. Z. J. Hunt also had a hotel. Hiram Hight built a steam mill in 1847. The first brick house was built in 1849 by Jacob Ernest. The post office in Prairie Creek has been open since 1822.
