The Premier of Victoria is like the leader of the government in the Australian state of Victoria. Think of them as the chief executive, similar to a state governor or a prime minister in other countries. The Premier is chosen by the governor of Victoria. They are usually the leader of the political party that wins the most seats in the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
Victoria started having its own government in 1855. Back then, the leader was often called the Premier or Prime Minister, but these titles weren't official. The first person to be officially called "Premier" without holding another main job was William Shiels in 1892.
What the Premier Does
The Premier leads the state government. They make important decisions for Victoria. This includes things like managing schools, hospitals, roads, and public transport. They also work with other state leaders and the national government.
Famous Premiers
Some Premiers of Victoria have served for a very long time. If a Premier serves for more than 3,000 days (that's over 8 years!), they get a special statue. These statues are placed at Treasury Place in Melbourne. Four Premiers have received this honor: Albert Dunstan, Henry Bolte, Rupert Hamer, and John Cain Junior.
Since 1933, almost every Premier of Victoria has had their portrait painted. These portraits are displayed at Queens Hall in Parliament House. This idea started with Fred Grimwade, who was a leader in the Victorian Parliament.
Who is the Current Premier?
The current Premier of Victoria since the 2014 election is Daniel Andrews from the Australian Labor Party. He announced that he would be stepping down from the role in September 2023.
