Premium-Cola is a special soft drink brand. It was started on November 23, 2001, in Hamburg, Germany. A group of people who were big fans of the German drink Afri-Cola created it. They were unhappy because Afri-Cola's recipe had been changed, making it have less caffeine.
The Story Behind Premium-Cola
Why the Protest Started
The group of fans called themselves "Interessengruppe Premium." This means "Premium Interest Group." They began a protest campaign that lasted for over two years. They were protesting against the new recipe of Afri-Cola.
Afri-Cola is a very old brand, first made in 1931. In 1999, a company called Mineralbrunnen Überkingen-Teinach AG bought it. This new owner decided to change Afri-Cola's recipe. The original Afri-Cola had 250 milligrams of caffeine per liter. The new version had less caffeine. Its taste was also made milder. This was done to make the drink appeal to more people.
Creating Premium-Cola
The "Interessengruppe Premium" did not like these changes. They wanted the original taste back. So, they decided to make their own cola. They named it Premium-Cola. This way, they could enjoy the taste they loved.
To avoid any legal problems with the Mineralbrunnen AG company, they made one small change. They replaced an ingredient called malic acid with phosphoric acid. This made their cola unique but still very similar to the original Afri-Cola taste.
