He is famous for being the showrunner (the person in charge of a TV show's daily production) for the HBO series Insecure. He also wrote and directed the Netflix movie Uncorked. Prentice Penny's Early Life
Prentice Penny grew up in the Windsor Hill area of Los Angeles. His family had a furniture business started by his grandfather. His mother, Brenda J. Penny, is a judge in Los Angeles.
Prentice went to the University of Southern California. He studied screenwriting there and finished in 1995. Before he started writing for TV, he worked as a substitute teacher.
Prentice Penny's Career in Television and Film
Prentice Penny began his career as a writer's trainee for the show Girlfriends. He later became a staff writer for the show. He then worked as a writer and co-producer on a series called Do Not Disturb.
He co-produced the show Scrubs. After that, he became a producer for the first time on the series Breaking In. In 2013, he joined The Hustle as an executive producer. Then, he became a co-executive producer and writer for Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
In 2017, Prentice Penny created, produced, and starred in Upscale with Prentice Penny. This show was about living a more thoughtful and stylish life.
Leading Insecure
In 2016, he became the showrunner for HBO's Insecure. He kept this role for all seasons of the show. In 2020, Insecure was nominated for eight Emmy Awards. This included a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.

As of 2020, Prentice Penny had many new projects planned. He is working with Chernin Entertainment and Netflix to direct a holiday movie. The idea for this movie came from Prentice and his wife. He wanted to create a magical Christmas movie that African-American families could see themselves in. He hoped it would be a movie black families could enjoy for many years.
