Prentice Penny, born on December 1, 1973, is a talented American producer, writer, and director. He is famous for being the main person in charge, called a showrunner, for the HBO show Insecure. Prentice also wrote and directed the Netflix movie Uncorked. He created and hosted his own show, Upscale with Prentice Penny. You might also know his work from popular TV series like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Happy Endings, and Scrubs.

Early Life and Education
Prentice Penny grew up in the Windsor Hill area of Los Angeles, California. His father ran a furniture business that his grandfather started. His mother, Brenda J. Penny, is a judge in Los Angeles.
Prentice went to the University of Southern California. He studied screenwriting there and finished in 1995. Before he got his first job writing for TV, he worked as a substitute teacher.
Career in Television and Film
Prentice Penny started his career as a writer's trainee on the TV show Girlfriends. He eventually became a staff writer for the show. After that, he worked as a writer and co-producer on other series. He was a co-producer for Scrubs and later became a producer for Breaking In.
In 2013, Prentice joined the show The Hustle as an executive producer. Then, he became a co-executive producer and writer for Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Insecure and Upscale
In 2016, Prentice Penny became the showrunner for the HBO series Insecure. He continued in this role for all seasons of the show. Insecure was very popular and was nominated for many awards. In 2020, its fourth season was nominated for eight Emmy Awards, including for Outstanding Comedy Series.
In 2017, Prentice also created, produced, and starred in his own show called Upscale with Prentice Penny. This show was about living a good life and making smart choices as a consumer.
Directing Movies
In March 2020, Prentice Penny's first movie, Uncorked, was released on Netflix. He wrote and directed this film. It tells the story of a father and son, where the son tries to become a sommelier. A sommelier is an expert in wine.
Prentice has also worked on other movie projects. He partnered with Netflix to direct a holiday film. He and his wife came up with the idea for this movie. They wanted to create a magical Christmas movie that Black families could see themselves in.
Other Projects
Prentice Penny has continued to work on new shows. In 2021, he teamed up with comedian Sam Jay to create PAUSE with Sam Jay for HBO. He is an executive producer for this show. It was renewed for a second season in 2021.
He has also worked with HBO to develop new series. One of these is The Untamed, which is a fantasy show based on comic books. Another show is queens, which is about the lives of immigrant women in New York City.
Personal Life
Prentice Penny is married to Tasha Penny, who is an attorney. They met when they were in college at the University of Southern California. They have three children together.
