Discovering Prescot's Past
The Prescot Museum first opened its doors on April 29, 1982. Back then, it was called the Prescot Museum of Clock and Watch Making. It focused mainly on how people in the area made clocks and watches. A famous historian named A. J. P. Taylor helped open it.
Growing Collections
Over time, the museum started collecting more than just clocks. It began to gather items about other parts of local history. This included old clothes and fabrics, as well as coins and medals. They also collected items related to military history. This helped the museum tell a wider story of Prescot and its people.
What You Can See at the Museum
Today, Prescot Museum has about 4,000 different items! Many of these are old photographs. There are also lots of "ephemera," which are things like old tickets, flyers, or posters. These items were only meant to be used for a short time.
Special Items on Display
The museum also has bigger and more unique items. You can see old costumes that people used to wear. There are tools that workers used in different jobs. You might also find parts of old clocks and many kinds of pottery. Each item helps tell a piece of Prescot's story.
The Old Museum Building
The museum used to be in a building called Cockpit House. This was a beautiful old house built in the Georgian style. It became a "Grade II listed" building in 1987. This means it's a very important historical building that needs to be protected. Even though the museum moved, the old building is still a part of Prescot's history.
