The Prescott House Museum is a special historic house and beautiful gardens located in Starr's Point, Nova Scotia. It is part of the Nova Scotia Museum system. This amazing house was built between 1812 and 1816 by a man named Charles Ramage Prescott. He called his country home Acacia Grove. It is one of the best examples of Georgian style houses still standing in Canada.

History of Prescott House

Charles Prescott's Vision

Charles Prescott was a very rich merchant from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He bought the land for Acacia Grove in 1811. He had decided to retire early from his busy shipping and trading business. Prescott used his new home as a place to try out new farming ideas. He brought in many different kinds of plants. He was especially interested in apple varieties. He shared these new apple trees freely with other farmers in the area.

Changes Over the Years

Charles Prescott passed away in 1859. After his death, the Kaye family bought the house. They took care of it for many years. However, later owners did not look after the house well. By the 1890s, it started to fall apart.

Restoration by the Prescott Sisters

In 1931, a special person named Mary Allison Prescott bought the property. She was the great-granddaughter of Charles Prescott. Mary Allison worked hard to restore the house to its former glory. She lived there with her two sisters until 1970. In 1971, they generously gave the house to the Province of Nova Scotia.

National Historic Site Status

Because of its important history, Prescott House was named a National Historic Site of Canada in 1969. It is also recognized as a Provincially Registered Property. This means it is protected under Nova Scotia's Heritage Property Act.
