The Prescott Street drill hall is an old building in Halifax, England. It used to be a place where soldiers trained and prepared. This building is considered important because of its history and design, so it's a "Grade II listed building". This means it's protected and can't be changed too much.

History of the Drill Hall

Building and Early Use

The Prescott Street drill hall was built between 1868 and 1870. It was designed by an architect named Richard Coad. The building was first used as the main base for a group of volunteer soldiers. This group was called the 4th West Yorkshire Rifle Volunteer Corps.

Over time, this volunteer group changed its name. In 1883, it became the 1st Volunteer Battalion of The Duke of Wellington's Regiment. Later, in 1908, it was known as the 4th Battalion of the same regiment.

World War I and II Service

When World War I started in August 1914, soldiers from this battalion gathered at the drill hall. From there, they were sent to fight on the Western Front. This was a major battle area during the war.

Before World War II, in 1938, the 4th Battalion changed again. It became the 58th Anti-Tank Regiment of the Royal Artillery. After serving in the Second World War, it changed its name once more in 1947. It was then known as the 382nd (Duke of Wellington's) Regiment, Royal Artillery.

Later Years and Decommissioning

In 1961, the unit at the drill hall changed back to a part of The Duke of Wellington's Regiment. However, fewer soldiers were based at Prescott Street. Only one company, called A Company, remained there.

This company continued to change names over the years. In 1967, it became C Company (The Duke of Wellington's), Yorkshire Volunteers. Then, in 1993, it was known as B (The Duke of Wellington's Regiment) Company.

Finally, in 1999, this company was disbanded, meaning it was no longer active. The Prescott Street drill hall was then closed as a military building. After that, it was changed into homes for people to live in.
