The President of the Republic of Crimea was the main leader of the Republic of Crimea when it was part of Ukraine. This important job existed for a little over a year, starting on February 16, 1994. The position was removed on March 17, 1995, because it did not follow the rules of the Constitution of Ukraine.
The President of Crimea
The role of President of the Republic of Crimea was created to lead the region. It was a very important position, similar to a country's president, but for the Crimean republic within Ukraine.
Who Was the Only President?
There was only one person who ever held the title of President of the Republic of Crimea. This was a politician named Yuriy Meshkov. He was elected in the 1994 Crimean presidential election. The first round of voting happened on January 16, 1994. A second round was held on January 30. Yuriy Meshkov won with a large number of votes, getting 72.9% of them. He was known for being in favor of closer ties with Russia.
Why the Position Ended
The job of President of the Republic of Crimea did not last long. It was removed on March 17, 1995. The main reason for this was that the position went against the laws and rules set out in the Constitution of Ukraine. Ukraine's government decided that having a president for Crimea was not allowed under its national laws.
