The President of Honduras is the top leader of the country. They are like the principal of a big school, but for the whole nation! Their official title is the President of the Republic of Honduras.

The President is both the head of state (the symbolic leader) and the head of government (the one who runs the country day-to-day). They are also the Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, meaning they lead the military.

Honduras has three main parts of its government: the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. The President leads the Executive branch. Their main job is to make sure the country's Constitution, laws, and agreements are followed. The President is chosen by the people in an election and serves for four years. They can be re-elected once.

Who Can Be President?

Becoming President of Honduras has very strict rules. These rules are in place to make sure no one person or group can take too much power and become a dictator.

To be able to run for President, a person must:

  • Be born in Honduras.
  • Be older than 30 years old when the election happens.
  • Have all the rights of a Honduran citizen.
  • Not be a leader of any church or religious group.
  • Not be an active member of the military in the six months before the election.
  • Not hold certain important government jobs, like a judge or a top government secretary, for at least six months before the election.
  • Not be an officer in the armed forces or police, or an active soldier, for at least 12 months before the election.
  • Not be a close family member (like a spouse or relative) of the current President, any military leader, or certain other high-ranking officials in the year before the election.

What Does the President Do?

The Constitution of Honduras gives the President many important jobs and powers. Here are some of the main things the President is responsible for:

  • Making sure the Constitution, laws, and agreements are followed.
  • Leading the country's overall policies and representing Honduras to other nations.
  • Protecting Honduras's independence, honor, and safety.
  • Keeping peace and security in the country and defending against any attacks.
  • Choosing and removing their cabinet members (like ministers) and other officials.
  • Calling the National Congress (the law-making body) for special meetings.
  • Speaking to the National Congress whenever needed.
  • Helping to introduce new laws to Congress.
  • Making sure the decisions of the Congress, courts, and election officials are carried out.
  • Issuing official orders, rules, and decisions based on the law.
  • Managing Honduras's relationships with other countries.
  • Making agreements and treaties with other countries (which Congress must approve).
  • Appointing ambassadors and other diplomatic representatives.
  • Greeting leaders and diplomats from other countries.
  • Leading the Armed Forces as their Commander-in-chief.
  • Declaring war or peace if Congress is not meeting (but Congress must be called immediately).
  • Making sure public officials do their jobs well.
  • Managing the country's money (the Treasury).
  • Taking special actions on money and economic issues if the country needs it (and telling Congress).
  • Negotiating loans from other countries (with Congress's approval).
  • Creating a plan for the country's development and making sure it happens.
  • Setting taxes and fees according to the law.
  • Granting pardons or reducing sentences for criminals.
  • Giving out military and civilian awards.
  • Collecting public money and deciding how it's spent.
  • Publishing reports on the country's income and spending every three months.
  • Organizing and promoting public education.
  • Maintaining and regulating health care for everyone in Honduras.
  • Guiding the country's economic and financial policies.
  • Overseeing banks, insurance companies, and financial groups.
  • Promoting farming and land reform.
  • Approving, rejecting, or publishing laws passed by Congress.
  • Leading efforts for economic and social cooperation, both within Honduras and with other countries, to improve people's lives.
  • Creating, maintaining, and ending public services.
  • Giving military ranks from lieutenant to captain.
  • Making sure the Army is fair, professional, and follows orders.
  • Allowing Honduran troops to serve in other countries, with Congress's permission.
