The President of Kiribati (called Beretitenti in the local Gilbertese language) is the leader of the country. This person is both the head of state (the main representative of the country) and the head of government (the person in charge of running the government).
How the President is Chosen
The president of Kiribati is chosen in a special way. First, citizens vote for members of the House of Assembly. These members are like representatives for different areas of the country.
After the general election, the members of the House of Assembly choose a few candidates for president. They must pick at least three but no more than four people from among themselves. Only these chosen people can run for president. Then, all citizens of Kiribati vote directly for one of these candidates. The person who gets the most votes becomes the president.
