This article lists the leaders of Niger since it became independent from France in 1960. The leader of a country is often called the head of state.

So far, eleven people have served as Niger's head of state. All of them have been men. Six of these leaders were from the military.

The current head of state is Abdourahamane Tchiani. He became the leader on July 26, 2023. This happened after a military takeover. This event removed the previous President, Mohamed Bazoum. Tchiani is now the president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP). This is a group of military leaders.

How Long Leaders Can Serve (Term Limits)

Since 2021, the Constitution of Niger says that a president can only serve two terms. A "term" is a period of time they are elected to lead. This rule helps make sure no one person stays in power for too long.

Mahamadou Issoufou was the first president to follow these term limits. He stepped down in 2021 after serving his two terms.
