Brigi Rafini, born on March 29, 1953, is an important politician from Niger. He served as the Prime Minister of Niger for ten years, from 2011 to 2021. He comes from a place called Iférouane in the Agadez Region and is a member of the Tuareg ethnic group.

Before becoming prime minister, Rafini held other important jobs. He was the Minister of Agriculture in the late 1980s. He also served as the Fourth Vice-President of the National Assembly of Niger from 2004 to 2009. He became prime minister after Mahamadou Issoufou became the President on April 7, 2011. It's also special because he was the first Tuareg person to hold the office of Prime Minister.

Early Life and Education

Brigi Rafini was born in 1953 in Iférouane, which is in the Agadez Region of what was then the Colony of Niger. At that time, Niger was part of French West Africa.

He went to primary and secondary school in his hometown of Iférouane and also in Agadez. After that, he continued his studies at the National School of Administration (ENA) in Niamey from 1971 to 1974. He returned to the ENA for more advanced studies between 1978 and 1981.

Rafini also studied abroad to further his knowledge. In 1983, he spent a year in Paris, France, at the French International Institute of Public Administration (IIAP). He returned to Paris about ten years later, studying at the French National School of Administration (ENA) from 1994 to 1995.

Political Journey

Brigi Rafini is a very experienced public servant and politician. Over the years, he has been a member of four different political parties. This shows his long involvement in Niger's government.

In the late 1980s, he was part of the National Movement for the Development of Society (MNSD). This was the main political party in Niger at that time. Later, he joined a group that broke away from the MNSD. This new group became the Nigerien Alliance for Democracy and Progress (ANDP).

During the presidency of Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara, Rafini helped create another ruling party. This was the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP-Jama'a). He served as a member of parliament and an officer in the National Assembly for the RDP. More recently, he joined the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS). This party came to power in 2011.

Becoming Prime Minister

After winning the 2011 Nigerien presidential election in early 2011, Mahamadou Issoufou became the President of Niger. He took office on April 7, 2011. One of his first actions as president was to choose Brigi Rafini as the new Prime Minister.

On April 21, 2011, a new government was formed with Rafini as its leader. This government included 23 members. Five years later, on April 2, 2016, President Issoufou was sworn in for his second term. He once again chose Brigi Rafini to continue serving as Prime Minister. Rafini served in this important role until April 2, 2021.
