How the President is Chosen
The President of Catalonia is chosen in a special way. First, the Parliament of Catalonia elects them. After that, the King of Spain officially appoints them to the position.
What the President Does
The President has two main types of jobs: representing Catalonia and leading the government.
Representing Catalonia
The President is the highest representative of the Catalan government. They also represent the Spanish State within Catalonia. This means they are the main face of Catalonia when dealing with other parts of Spain.
The President also handles relationships with other self-governing regions of Spain. They are in charge of calling for elections in Catalonia, which must happen at least every four years. They also appoint the regional ministers, who are officially called consellers, and other important officials. The President also signs laws for Catalonia in the name of the King.
Leading the Government
The President is a member of the Catalan government and is its leader. They make sure the government works well together. The President chooses the ministers and can also remove them from their positions.
They are also in charge of calling meetings of the Executive Council and leading these meetings. The President signs official orders (called decrees) that the Executive Council agrees on and makes sure they are published. They can also call for special meetings of the Catalan Parliament. Sometimes, they can even decide to dissolve the Parliament or ask for a general debate.
The President also plans what laws their government will try to pass. They make sure that new rules and guidelines are created. They also provide any information that the Parliament asks for.
