Building a Chilean Landmark
Building this amazing bridge started in 1961. That was when Jorge Alessandri was the President of Chile. It took five years to finish! The bridge was finally ready in 1966, during the time Eduardo Frei Montalva was president.
How the Bridge is Put Together
The Presidente Ibáñez Bridge is a type of bridge called a suspension bridge. It has two tall metal towers, each about 25 meters high. These towers stand on strong bases made of reinforced concrete.
The bridge also uses eight strong steel cables to hold it up. These are the main suspension cables. There are also 22 smaller vertical rods on each side. These rods hang down from the main cables and help support the bridge deck. The bridge carries Chile Route 240, which is a road for cars and trucks.
