Preston Center is a busy commercial area in north Dallas, Texas. It's located where Preston Road and Northwest Highway meet. This area covers about 103 acres (41.7 hectares).

Preston Center is known for its shops, offices, and homes. It has been an important part of Dallas for many years.

Preston Center: A Bustling Dallas Hub

Preston Center first opened in the 1950s. It was a new kind of shopping area outside the main city. It had the first suburban Neiman Marcus store. It also had a very large Sanger-Harris department store. This store was the biggest suburban department store in the country at the time. It was about 242,000 square feet (22,482 square meters).

How Preston Center Grew Over Time

Since the 1950s, Preston Center has changed a lot. It started as a shopping hub. Now, it's also a major office area. It has over 3 million square feet (278,709 square meters) of office space. Even former President George W. Bush has an office here.

The area is surrounded by great neighborhoods. University Park is to the south. There are condos along Northwest Highway to the east. The Preston Hollow neighborhood is to the north. Preston Center also has more than 500,000 square feet (46,451 square meters) of shops. There is also a hotel and many homes. It's a great example of an edge city. An edge city is a place outside a main city that has become a big center for jobs, shopping, and entertainment.

Building and Growth in Preston Center

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Preston Center saw a lot of building. Two tall, 20-story office towers were built. By 1989, some of these buildings were partly empty. People living nearby in Preston Hollow worried about this fast growth. They felt it showed the city wasn't managing its development well. They wanted the new buildings to be shorter and fit better with their community.

As of 2019, many properties in Preston Center were still owned by the same families for a long time. The city also provides a public parking garage for the area. This helps people visit the shops and offices.

Some property owners in 2019 didn't want to redevelop their land. They worried it would stop their income for a while. Even with some disagreements, Preston Center keeps growing. New buildings are still being built in this popular area.
