Pretty Polly's Family
Pretty Polly came from a family of great racehorses. Her father was a good stallion named Gallinule. Her mother, Admiration, also had a successful racing career in Ireland. Admiration gave birth to nine winners, and her family line became very famous in horse racing.
Pretty Polly's Racing Career
Pretty Polly was owned and bred by Major Eustace Loder. Her trainer was Peter Gilpin. She started racing when she was two years old in 1903. That year, she won all nine of her races!
Winning the Triple Crown
In 1904, Pretty Polly continued her winning streak. She won the 1,000 Guineas race easily. She also won The Oaks and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Her biggest win that year was the St. Leger Stakes. Winning these three races meant she had completed the Fillies' Triple Crown! She also won the Nassau Stakes and the Park Hill Stakes.
Later Races
Pretty Polly kept racing when she was four and five years old. She won six more races, including the Coronation Cup in both 1905 and 1906. In total, Pretty Polly won 22 out of her 24 races. She came in second place only twice.
Pretty Polly as a Mother
After her racing career, Pretty Polly became a mother horse, also known as a broodmare. She had ten foals (baby horses). Four of her children became winners in flat races. Her four daughters also became successful mothers themselves. They helped create a famous horse family known as the Pretty Polly family. This family is still very important in horse racing history.
Honors and Legacy
Pretty Polly is remembered as one of the most important female horses in racing history. She was called the Broodmare of the Century because her family line became the most successful in Thoroughbred racing. There are even races named after her, like the Pretty Polly Stakes in England and Ireland.
