Discovering Prevelly

Prevelly was first developed in the early 1960s by a person named Geoff Edwards. He divided the land into blocks for people to buy. The local government officially recognized Prevelly as a town in 1978.

How Prevelly Got Its Name

The town of Prevelly is named after a famous monastery called Preveli on the island of Crete in Greece. This name has a very interesting story behind it.

A Special Thank You

During World War II in 1941, many Australian soldiers were in Crete. The monks at the St. John Monastery in Preveli gave these soldiers a safe place to stay before they could be taken away by ships. Geoff Edwards was one of these soldiers. To show his thanks to the people of Crete and the monastery, he decided to build a special chapel in Prevelly. This chapel is called the St. John the Theologian chapel. People from Australia and Britain who were also soldiers helped raise money for the chapel starting in 1984.
