Pride is an American movie from 2007. It was released by Lionsgate on March 23, 2007. The film is based on the true story of Jim Ellis. He was a swim coach in Philadelphia.
The movie stars Terrence Howard as Jim Ellis. It also features Bernie Mac and Kimberly Elise. Sunu Gonera directed the film. The story is about Jim Ellis and a friendly janitor named Elston. They become good friends and work together.
The Story of Pride
The movie takes place in 1974. It was a tough time for many people to find jobs. Even college-educated Jim Ellis struggled. He was a great swimmer in the past. Jim found work at the old Marcus Foster Recreation Center.
His job was to prepare the center to close down. This caused problems with Elston, the janitor. Elston was worried about losing his job. The center had a run-down swimming pool. Jim decided to fix it up.
One day, Jim invited some Black teenagers to swim. Andre, Hakim, Reggie, Puddin’ Head, and Walt were good swimmers. With Jim's help, they could become amazing. Jim also became interested in Hakim's sister, Sue. She wanted Jim to focus on school first.
With Elston's help, Jim decided to save the pool. He started the city's first all African-American swim team. They called themselves the "PDR team." PDR stands for Pride, Determination, and Resilience. It also stood for Philadelphia Department of Recreation.
A talented girl named Willie joined the team. She was even better than the boys. This made their chances of winning much better. They would compete against more experienced white teams.
However, Black swimmers faced many challenges. The team had to deal with racism and unfairness. Jim had experienced this himself ten years earlier. Through all their struggles, Jim and Elston helped the kids. They taught them to be great swimmers. They also helped them fight against prejudice and other difficulties.
