Priekule is a small town located in the South Kurzeme Municipality of Latvia. It's in the Courland region, which is on the western side of Latvia. In 2020, about 1,872 people lived there.
A Look Back in Time
Priekule was first mentioned in history way back in 1483. At that time, it was known as a strong, fortified manor. A manor is like a large country house with its own land.
Growing into a Town
Priekule really started to grow and become a town after 1871. This was when the Liepāja–Vilnius Railway was built right through the area. Railways were very important back then for moving goods and people, helping places like Priekule develop.
Becoming an Official Town
Because of its growth, the government of Latvia officially gave Priekule "town rights" in 1928. This meant it was recognized as a proper town with its own local government and rules.
