The Prime Minister of Cameroon is an important government role. This person is officially the head of government. However, in Cameroon, the President holds most of the power. The President can choose and also remove the Prime Minister at any time.
The current Prime Minister is Joseph Ngute. President Paul Biya appointed him. He started his job on January 4, 2019.
History of the Prime Minister Role
The position of Prime Minister first appeared in eastern Cameroon. This was in 1960, when it became independent from France. In 1961, western Cameroon also gained independence from Britain.
At that time, Cameroon was a federal republic. This meant it had two main parts: East Cameroon and West Cameroon. Each part had its own separate Prime Minister.
In 1972, Cameroon became a single, united country. The Prime Minister position was then empty for a short time. In 1975, Paul Biya was named Prime Minister for all of Cameroon. Later, when Biya became President, the role of Prime Minister did not exist for a while. It was brought back in 1991.
