The Prime Minister of Montenegro is the main leader of the government in Montenegro. This important job is officially called the President of the Government of Montenegro. The Prime Minister's main role is to guide the government's work. They also present the government's plans and a list of new ministers to the Parliament. If the Prime Minister resigns, their whole government also ends.

The current Prime Minister is Milojko Spajić. He is the leader of the political party called Europe Now!. The Parliament of Montenegro approved him on October 31, 2023. This happened after the 44th government of Montenegro was formed.

History of Montenegro's Prime Ministers

Montenegro's first modern government started on March 20, 1879. This was during the time when Montenegro was a principality. The person in charge of the government was called the President of the Ministerial Council.

On August 28, 1910, Montenegro became a kingdom. During both the principality and kingdom times, the Prime Minister's role was not very powerful. It mostly depended on the wishes of the ruler, Nikola I.

After Montenegro surrendered during World War I on January 15, 1916, the government had to leave the country. It stayed in exile until it no longer existed. On November 26, 1918, the Podgorica Assembly decided to unite Montenegro with Serbia. This led to the creation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Stojan Protić became the first prime minister of this new kingdom on December 20, 1918. Even after this, the old King Nikola I kept appointing prime ministers for Montenegro while in exile. This continued until he passed away in 1921. The Montenegrin government in exile then ended the next year.

Under the communist system, Montenegro got its own government again on March 7, 1945. A special ministry for Montenegro was created within the larger government of Yugoslavia. A minister for Montenegro was in charge of setting up the first real post-war government. This new government officially started on April 17, 1945. These governments were led by a Prime Minister until February 4, 1953. After that, they were led by a President of the Executive Council until January 15, 1991. Since then, the leader has again been called the Prime Minister.
