The President of Montenegro is the main leader of the country of Montenegro. This person is the head of state, which means they represent Montenegro both inside the country and to other countries around the world. The current president is Jakov Milatović, who started his job on May 20, 2023. The president lives in an official home called the Blue Palace, located in Cetinje.
The president is elected by the people of Montenegro. They can serve for five years at a time. A person can only be elected president twice in a row. To become president, a person must be a citizen of Montenegro. They also need to have lived in Montenegro for at least ten of the past fifteen years.

How the President is Chosen
The President of Montenegro is elected for a period of five years. A person can only be elected president for two terms in a row. This means they can serve for a maximum of ten years if they are re-elected. The president officially starts their job after taking an oath in front of the members of the Parliament.
If there is a war or a state of emergency, the president's term can be extended. This extension can last for up to 90 days after the special situation ends. The President of Montenegro cannot hold any other public job while serving as president.
What the President Does
The President of Montenegro has many important duties. These duties help the country run smoothly and represent Montenegro to the world. Here are some of the main things the president does:
- Represents Montenegro: The president acts as the face of Montenegro, both within the country and when dealing with other nations.
- Leads the Army: The president is in charge of the country's military, following decisions made by the Defense and Security Council.

- Calls for Elections: The president sets the dates for new elections for the Parliament.

- Appoints Diplomats: The president chooses and removes ambassadors and other leaders of Montenegro's diplomatic offices in other countries. This is done with advice from the government and Parliament.
- Welcomes Foreign Diplomats: The president accepts official papers from diplomats from other countries.
- Gives Awards: The president gives out medals and honors to people in Montenegro.
- Grants Amnesty: The president can forgive certain crimes, which is called granting amnesty.
- Other Duties: The president also performs other tasks that are written in the country's Constitution or other laws.
When the President Cannot Serve
If the President of Montenegro cannot do their job, or if their term ends before a new president is elected, another person steps in. In such cases, the President of the Parliament of Montenegro takes over the duties of the president temporarily.
How Laws Are Approved
The President of Montenegro plays a key role in making new laws official. After the Parliament passes a law, the president must announce it within seven days. If the law was passed very quickly, the president has only three days to announce it. The president can also send a law back to the Parliament if they want them to reconsider it. However, if the Parliament votes for the law again, the president must then announce it.
