The President of Montenegro is the leader of the country of Montenegro. Think of them as the main representative for Montenegro, both inside the country and when dealing with other nations. The person holding this important job right now is Jakov Milatović, who started on May 20, 2023. The President's official home is a place called the Blue Palace, located in Cetinje.
The President can serve for two terms, and each term lasts for five years. To become President, a person must be a citizen of Montenegro. They also need to have lived in Montenegro for at least ten out of the past fifteen years.

How Long Does the President Serve?
According to Montenegro's main rulebook, the Constitution of Montenegro, here's how long a President serves:
- The President of Montenegro is chosen for a five-year period.
- The same person can be elected President only two times.
- The President starts their job after taking an oath in front of the Parliament members.
- If a war or emergency happens, the President's term can be extended. This extension can last for up to 90 days after the situation ends.
- The President of Montenegro cannot hold any other public job at the same time.
What Does the President Do?
The President of Montenegro has many important responsibilities. These duties help the country run smoothly and represent it well on the world stage. Here are some of the main things the President does, as stated in the Constitution of Montenegro:
- The President represents Montenegro both within the country and when dealing with other nations.
- They are in charge of the Army, following decisions made by the Defense and Security Council.
- The President officially announces new laws.
- They call for elections for the Parliament.
- The President suggests important people for jobs to the Parliament. This includes the person who will be the Prime Minister, judges for the Constitutional Court, and the protector of human rights.
- They choose and remove ambassadors and other diplomatic leaders for Montenegro in other countries. This is done with the Government's suggestion and after getting advice from the Parliament.
- The President accepts official papers from foreign diplomats.
- They give out medals and awards from Montenegro.
- The President can grant amnesty, which means forgiving someone for a crime.
- They also do other tasks that are mentioned in the Constitution or by law.
What Happens if the President Can't Do Their Job?
If the President's term ends, or if they are temporarily unable to do their duties, another person steps in. The President of the Parliament of Montenegro takes over this role until a new President is elected or the original President can return to their duties.
How Laws Are Made Official
When a new law is passed by the Parliament, the President of Montenegro has a role in making it official. The President must announce the law within seven days of it being passed. If the law was passed very quickly, they must announce it within three days.
The President can also send a law back to the Parliament. This means they want the Parliament to think about it again and make a new decision. If the Parliament passes the law again, the President must then announce it.
