The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic (in Czech: Předseda vlády České republiky) is the main leader of the country's government. They are the most powerful person in the part of government that carries out laws.

The country's main rulebook, called the Constitution, says that the President needs the Prime Minister's approval for important decisions. These include choosing judges and ambassadors, leading the military, agreeing to international deals, and giving official pardons.

The current Prime Minister is Petr Fiala. He leads the ODS. President Miloš Zeman officially appointed him on 17 December 2021. This happened after the 2021 election. He is the 13th person to hold this important job.

What the Prime Minister Does

The Prime Minister has many important duties. They lead the government and make sure it runs smoothly. They also represent the Czech Republic on the world stage.

Leading the Government

The Prime Minister is in charge of the entire government team. They can decide to remove a government member from their job. They also handle matters related to secret government information.

Representing the Czech Republic

Because of their position, the Prime Minister represents the Czech Republic at important meetings. For example, they attend the European Council, where leaders from European Union countries meet. They also get a special diplomatic passport for international travel.

Overseeing Security Forces

The Prime Minister is also the direct boss of the General Inspection of Security Forces. This group checks on the police and other security agencies. The Prime Minister chooses and can remove its director. The director reports directly to the Prime Minister.

Approving Government Decisions

According to Article 63 of the Constitution, the Prime Minister must sign government decisions. The entire government also signs these decisions. The Prime Minister can let another government member sign for them. They can also refuse to sign a decision if they do not agree with it.

Prime Minister's Powers

The Prime Minister has significant powers to lead the country. These powers help them manage the government and respond to emergencies.

Changing the Government

One major power is the ability to change the entire government. The Prime Minister can decide to replace all government members. This shows how much authority they have over the government's makeup.

Declaring a State of Emergency

The Prime Minister can also declare a state of emergency. This is done in serious situations, like natural disasters or major crises. After the Prime Minister declares it, the government must approve or cancel this decision within 24 hours. If there is a big problem that affects government decisions, the Prime Minister makes choices with the Ministry of Defense.

Prime Minister's Home

The official home of the Prime Minister is Kramář's Villa. It is a beautiful building with a long history.

The villa was built between 1911 and 1914. A famous architect from Vienna, Friedrich Ohmann, designed it. It serves as both a residence and a place for official meetings.
