A Sad Passing
Sadly, Prince Sigismund's life was very short. He passed away on June 18, 1866, when he was just 21 months old. He died from meningitis, a serious illness that affects the brain and spinal cord. His death happened at the New Palace, the same place he was born.
He was buried in the royal mausoleum at the Friedenskirche (Church of Peace) in Potsdam. His mother, Empress Victoria, was very sad about losing her young son.
Royal Connections
Prince Sigismund was a grandson of Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom. He was the first of Queen Victoria's many grandchildren to pass away. His last cousin, Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, lived for a very long time and died in 1981. This means there was almost 115 years between the death of the first and last of Queen Victoria's grandchildren.
