Prince Toneri (born January 28, 676 – died December 6, 735) was an important imperial prince in ancient Japan. He lived during the Nara period, a time when Japan's capital was in Nara. He was a son of Emperor Tenmu, a powerful ruler. Prince Toneri is also known as the father of Emperor Junnin. After his death, he was given a special name, Emperor Sudoujinkei (崇道尽敬皇帝). He was a key leader in the Imperial family and helped create a very important history book.

Prince Toneri's Life and Role

Prince Toneri was a significant figure in early Japanese history. He lived at the beginning of the Nara period. This was a time of great change and development in Japan. He gained a lot of political power. He worked alongside another important leader, Prince Nagaya.

Supervising the Nihon Shoki

One of Prince Toneri's most famous achievements was supervising the creation of the Nihon Shoki. This book is one of Japan's oldest official history books. It tells the story of Japan from ancient times up to the 8th century. It is a very important source for understanding early Japanese history and myths.

Prince Toneri's Family

Prince Toneri was a son of Emperor Tenmu. His mother was Princess Niitabe, who was a daughter of Emperor Tenji. This made him part of a very important royal lineage.

His Children

Prince Toneri had many children. His main wife was Taima-no-Yamashiro. Together, they had several sons. One of his sons, Prince Ōi, later became Emperor Junnin. This made Prince Toneri the father of an emperor.

He also had other sons, including Prince Mihara, Prince Mishima, Prince Fune, Prince Ikeda, Prince Moribe, and Prince Miura. He lived a long life, longer than many of his brothers.

Descendants and Famous Relatives

Some of Prince Toneri's descendants later took the family name Kiyohara. This group is known as the Kiyohara clan. One famous person from this clan was Sei Shōnagon. She was a well-known writer in Japan's Heian period. She wrote a famous book called The Pillow Book.
